Finding the Right Bike
To really enjoy cycling, it's important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike:

The Right Ride
In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:

  • Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
  • Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
  • Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Price
A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.

  • Entry-level--You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
  • Mid-range--Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the "sweet spot." Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
  • High-end--Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultra-lightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.

The Right Size
Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

  • Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
  • Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
  • Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

The Right Accessories
When you make a bike purchase, don't forget these crucial add-ons:

  • Helmet (this is a must!)
  • Seat pack
  • Lock
  • Hydration pack, or water bottles and bottle cages
  • Spare tubes
  • Portable bike pump
  • Gloves

4 out of 5 stars Love it   July 24, 2010

The price is great for a road bike. I want to try a road bike first to see if I like this sport before I buy a good one. The good one will cost easily $1000.00 and above.

If you are under 5'7'', it's too high.

It looks great and durable. The only thing I feel inconvenient is font derailer. Even it's tuned. It's still not smooth.

4 out of 5 stars Good bike for the $$$$   July 19, 2010

I decided to purchase this bike after doing a lot of investigation. I would have loved to have purchased a $ 1,000 bike, but that was way out of my budget. I am a novice cyclist and wanted to get into riding. I read the reviews on this bike and knew what I was getting for the price. I really like this bike. The bike is a little heavy, but it shifts well and handles very good. I haven't had any problems with the tires and have had only small problems with the brakes. With a little tweaking, this bike handles very well. I would recommend this as an entry level bike for someone who is just starting out cycling.

Very good bike at a relatively inexpensive price. After a few minor adjustments,I have been completely satisfied with this bike. I ride it 2-5 times a week, 6-8 miles a ride. The bike is smooth and comfortable. I would recommend this bike to my friends looking for a starter road bike.

I purchased this bike because I am trying to save money by biking onto campus from my apartment instead of driving (I am in grad school). I'm very comfortable with mountain bikes, so I figured that it would be best for me to get used to road bikes with a cheap, entry-level road bike like this one, and so far it's working out just okay.

My advice is, if you're trying to save money and already experienced with bikes, get this one if it is still well under $200. Having ridden this bike for 2 months, I am finding myself looking forward to being able to upgrade the brakes and wheels (I can't afford to right now).

The brakes on this bike are kind of cheap, and the wheels aren't quick-release. If you're going to park it in a place with lots of bike theft, you need to be able to lock both wheels to something with a U-lock, and that's usually easiest if you can remove the front wheel quickly and lock it with the back to something.

Bottom-line: I think if I could've found another road bike with shift levers next to the brake levers, quick-release wheels AND for under $300, I would've gotten it instead.

Fit
I am 5'9" with a 31" inseam. Standing over this bike with some normal running shoes I actually only have about an inch of clearance, so this bike is a little big for me. Otherwise I think the dimensions of the bike might be very good for someone 1 or 2 inches taller than me. If you're much taller, I can see how this bike might be a little short length-wise, like another reviewer suggested.

Looks
From a distance it is a very attractive bike. Actually, the first thing I did after taking it out of the box was remove the kickstand and the stickers. It looks very slick without them. But anyone who is experienced with bikes will notice the thick, clunky aluminum frame and the plastic pantsguard.

Riding
Out of the box I only had to adjust the front brakes and the shifters, which I was pretty pleased about. Fiddling with the brakes really gave me the sense that they were very cheap quality. But they do the job.

I also had to get used to frequently moving my hands from the brakes near the front of the handlebars to the shifters at the back; I have to be a little quick with my hands sometimes. The Denali Pro has shift levers placed near the brake levers, which I think would have been perfect for this bike, too. I'm also not a fan at all of rotary shifters, but I've gotten used to these.

Fortunately, my campus is very flat. If I were biking somewhere with a few hills I would not recommend getting this bike. I would recommend getting a lighter bike with the shift levers near the brake levers.

This is a good bike but it comes with cheap parts that hinders its potential. Overall the bike is good. if you can replace parts such as the shift gear then you can make this bike run smooth and faster. otherwise its a bit slow compared to other road bikes.
