NOT what I expected July 11, 2010 Heather (Helena, Mt United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I so wanted to love this product especially since my son has outgrown his toddler pilot seat. After installing on both my bike and my son's, we took it for a test ride...all was well. A few days later, we decided to go on a long family ride. After only about 2 miles the my son's bike started leaning. The part that attaches to my sons bike frame had shifted so far that he fell off. Needless to say, he was petrified. We ended our ride by walked home and will not ever use it again.
My sons love the "alligator connector" July 9, 2010 Stephen A. Rosston (Los Angeles, CA) I was a little unsure about the Trailgator tow bar initially, but based on many/mostly positive reviews, I decided to give it a try. Now that I have, I think that it is absolutely TERRIFIC!
I never worked in a bike shop and don't own any specialty tools, so when I read about people drilling and otherwise modifying this tow bar, I didn't think that this was something to attempt to use with my 4 year old cyclist. However, several positive reviews promised a fun experience and instilled in me the desire and confidence to be adventurous; and so I decided to give it a try.
My findings: WOW! This thing delivers everything promised, and it is very fun!
The installation was straightforward and documented fairly well with text and images (in a dozen languages). I only needed a couple of ordinary drivers and wrenches to install it. No drilling, welding, or gluing involved :)
My older boy and I have been taking bike rides together for the past year or so, and the little guy (4 year old) can't join us for lengthy trips, which are the norm. With the tow-bar installed, I connected little guy's bike (with training wheels)to my bike and off we raced - the three of us. Bike riding suddenly got more fun for everyone!
The tow-bar performs beautifully! Everything feels solid and safe, turns are wider but comfortable, no issues at all on moderate hills, and both boys think it's cool! Oh, there is one potential negative. If you don't like people to point at you and say "Wow, look at that!" then you might find riding with this somewhat awkward.
Exactly as it seems July 8, 2010 getdano This product is exactly what it looks like in the pictures. I was astonished at how easy it is too use and how much fun my daughter and I have with it. We ride to the park connected and she rides around the park when we get there.
The connections on this are solid nut/bolt, solid locking pin, or solid quick release just like those on bike wheels. I can't see this thing breaking or somehow coming undone while riding. I can see a person not setting it up right and having the front wheel of the child's bike touching the ground and that causing a wreck; however, this is really easy to avoid by taking the time to set it up correctly the first time.
In any case, I highly recommend it. We like it so much that we bought the additional seat post attachment for my wife and I to trade off.
I also recommend spending the money on a nicer kids bike. We bought the Specialized HotRock for our 4.5 year old and the significantly lighter bike has done wonders for her confidence and ability to ride.
Buy this and go have fun with your Kids -
Great Invention! July 4, 2010 Cycling Fam This product works perfectly for our daughter, who is small for her age and not riding without training wheels. She loves it too! The trail-a-bikes are too big for her, and this is perfect because it works with the kids bike - you don't have an extra one wheeled contraption hanging around! It is relatively easy to install, and very easy to unhook when you are not using it.
Great Solution for Us June 19, 2010 A. Rivers We just finished assembling our new Trail Gator and taking it for a test ride, and it seems to be the perfect solution for our family. It was a bit tricky to assemble, but no more than I expected from equipment not tailor-made to our specific bikes, and there were enough fittings included that we were able to make it fit very well. It seems to be extremely sturdy and well made and not in the least bit dangerous. I have been carrying my 4 yr. old son in a bike seat on the back of my bike, which works great for smooth rides, but it can get a bit scary on rough terrain. I think the Trail Gator is going to work great for us on the more hilly and curvy trails that we sometimes like to take, plus, this way our son gets a bit of exercise along the way. Great product = Lots of fun!
