Amazon.com Product Description Stay within your ideal training and intensity range while jogging or working out with the Polar FT40 women's heart rate monitor watch. The FT40 works by first checking your daily condition, and then guiding you to the ideal training intensity for your age and fitness level. Knowing your heart rate not only helps you reach your personal fitness goal, but also improves your physical condition in general, as it's vitally important to train at the appropriate intensity level. If you exercise too hard, you may quit before you reach the real benefit, but if you work out too leisurely, you'll struggle to lose weight at all. The FT40 helps overcome these problems by encouraging you to map out a complete fitness routine. The FT40 is packed with innovative training features to help you toward your exercise goals. First off, the watch displays heart rate info in several ways, including as a percentage of your maximum heart rate, as beats per minute, and within a graphical target zone indicator. The watch also offers a visual and audible alarm for when you exceed or dip below your target zone--a great way to stay motivated while on the track. And users will love the EnergyPointer, ZonePointer, and Polar OwnCal modes. The EnergyPointer determines the point at which your training no longer just burns fat but also improves your overall fitness level--an ideal feature for high-performance runners. The ZonePointer, meanwhile, is an audible and visual feature on the display of your FT40 that shows you where your current heart rate sits within your target heart rate zone. Finally, the Polar OwnCal mode shows your energy expenditure during one exercise session, as well as your accumulated kilocalories during several exercise sessions. You can also set daily and weekly exercise goals in terms of calorie expenditure, helping you achieve both short-term and long-term goals. Other features include a built-in fitness test that measures your aerobic fitness at rest in just five minutes; a ZoneLock mode that lets you activate a target zone in the midst of training with the press of a button; an OwnCode mode that prevents crosstalk from other heart rate monitors nearby; a recording mode that tracks your average and maximum heart rate, calorie expenditure, and total exercise time, and then puts it in an exercise file (with 50 total files); water resistance to 30 meters; a 12/24-hour clock with a day/week indicator; a built-in backlight; an alarm with a snooze; a low battery indicator; and a Polar FlowLink connection for transferring data between the FT40 and a computer. Sporting an attractive green housing, the watch carries a two-year warranty. Manufacturer's Warranty The original purchaser of this heart rate monitor is backed by a limited warranty that states that this product that the product will be free from defects in material or workmanship for two years from the date of purchase. About Polar The first EKG accurate wireless heart rate monitor was invented by Polar back in 1977 as a training tool for the Finnish National Cross Country Ski Team. The concept of "intensity training" by heart rate swept the athletic world in the eighties. By the 1990s, individuals were looking to heart rate monitors not only for performance training needs, but also for achieving everyday fitness goals. Today, the same concept of heart rate training is being used by world-class athletes as well as everyday people trying to lose weight. Polar is the leading brand among consumers, coaches, and personal trainers worldwide and the company is committed to not only producing the best products, but also being the leading educator on the benefits of heart rate based exercise.

As good as written April 17, 2010 Iles Fan (Boston, MA USA) I am very pleased with this product; it came as described. I do not want to bore you with the physiological concepts. However, a few things must be noted. First, there are various ways to exercise. Secondly, you have to determine what your ultimate goal is prior to implementing a workout routine.
The Polar FT40 quite readily displays if you are burning fat or pushing beyond this zone; becoming more fit. There is a big difference between the two and this watch will keep you in the correct zone. You want to lose fat? Then it is essential that your heart rate does not exceed 60% - 70% of your maximum cardio output. Out of shape people do not seem to understand this. They exercise until they drop, go home exhausted and more importantly hungry, and end up eating more calories than they expended at the gym. Go Slow!! How slow? The FT 40 will determine that heart rate that you should not exceed in order to burn fat calories. Do not exceed this rate and you are on your way for losing an incredible amount of weight; fat weight.
You already in shape people that want to become more fit. The watch will tell you to exceed the fat burning heart rate zone. Otherwise you are not really accomplishing anything.
In conclusion, it is merely common sense. A big heavy, out of shape, 50 year old should not try to exerise like Michael Phelps. Nor should Michael Phelps try to improve his performance by exercising like a big, heavy, 50 year old, out of shape guy. Yes it is that simple.
In conclusion, this monitor does a lot of things. The one most simple display, fat vs fit must be followed closely. Doing this will change you, failure to follow the aforementioned guidelines will accomplish nothing.
Works as advertised March 15, 2010 Balladeer7 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I selected the Polar FT40 after reading numerous other reviews on Amazon. I use it at the gym so I don't need integrated GPS which some higher end products provide. Other reviewers cited difficulties sustaining a regular heartbeat. I have been using the monitor for three weeks (plenty of time to fail later I suppose), but to date it has worked exactly as advertised. I wear on it on weight training circuits and on ellipticals, treadmills and stairclimbers. It holds a consistent heartbeat, is comfortable and syncs with the aerobic equipment at the gym, displaying the heartbeat on the equipment panel. I find having heartbeat information readily available does improve my workouts, particularly on interval training, where I can monitor maximum heart rate and time to return to baseline heart rate. It also points out when I am not working hard enough (more than I thought). It seems rugged as well. I've banged it around a bit.
I upload the data to the Polar web site which syncs the data with Virgin Miles (a pedometer site that my company supports). This work seamlessly and let's me track progress over time.
I am not sure what else I would want in a monitor. It meets my needs perfectly. I recommend it.
My first Polar February 23, 2010 Marcio Oliveira (Brazil) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the first Polar Watch I own, so it will take me a while to get used to it and extract the most from it. But, the product looks good, fits well, was delivered on time and with good packaging, so far, so good!
The only let-down was that the link to computer was not included (I didnt realize that) so I woint be able to upload my data to personaltrainer. That's why I gave it only 4 stars (for not telling me very clearly that I needed an extra accessory).
Works great February 1, 2010 Katriona Hartin (Atlanta, GA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Has all the features I needed. Color is more pea green rather than lime. The band is a little uncomfortable as it is made out of plastic in parts. Tends to scratch. Not too bothersome though.
Accurate results = better planning January 23, 2010 Sarah (VA) After getting back into working out I decided I wanted a "good" heart rate monitor. After using this one I have found that the calories the gym equipment tells you you're buting is off. In about 60 minutes the gym equipment was saying that I had actually burned 60 calories more than I really had (according to the FT40). This really helps when you are trying to count calories. Another plus it that now I know how many calories are being burned during all of the group fitness class I do, and I don't just have to guess at it. It is great how the watch stores 50 training files so I can review what I did a few days or weeks ago while I'm at the gym, and I'm not limited to just having the data on the computer at home. I will say that it takes some getting used to wearing the chest strap/transmitter, but I am guessing that is withe same with any hear rate monitor. Instead of getting just a "good" heart rate monitor, I definitely feel like I got a GREAT one. I love the green, too!
